Aristotle observed the universe (hopefully) and came to the conclusion it was eternal. The church fathers suppressed this idea a bit during the middle ages, and the idea that the universe had a beginning, and will have an end has stuck...really stuck.

In 7-D General Relativity the universe is eternal in duration, finite in mass...and yet had a beginning and will end- from our frame of reference.
