HI: Varmints are pests: rats, mice or wolves...usually but not always mammals. Critter is a more friendly but somewhat impersonal term reserved perhaps for somebody else's dog. Critter is also more general and can refer to any species of animal...Oh, and semantics IS important! Best Wishes Sam Cox
